Check Your Holiday Rental for Hidden Surveillance Cameras

Australia - There's something unsettling about the idea of being watched while you and your loved ones kick back on holidays. If you've searched online to find whether holiday rental landlords spy on their guests, there's plenty to feed your paranoia...

Still, if something feels off or you want to sweep the house, there are some steps you can take. Although without professionals and high-tech gear involved, it can't be 100 per cent accurate...

Julian Claxton, a counter-espionage specialist, recommended a hidden camera detector — small devices that project a light that will reflect off the lens of a covert camera... "The reality is, that's how a lot of these cameras can be found — through anomalies. Things that just don't look right within an environment," he explained.

Tips:

1. Inspect what's on the Wi-Fi network... Many cameras sold in consumer electronic stores need an internet connection so they can be viewed remotely from a computer or app. This could provide a clue.
   
   
2. Try to spot the camera lens... Julian Claxton, a counter-espionage specialist, recommended a hidden camera detector — small devices that project a light that will reflect off the lens of a covert camera.
   
   
3. Check the power points... Hidden cameras need ongoing power, so Mr Claxton suggested looking at what's connected to power points.
    
4. Look for oddly placed objects... Hidden cameras can be built into just about anything, but for the lay person, Mr Claxton suggested using "a bit of common sense". more

Another TSCM Fail - Dentist Sweeps Office - In Situ Spycam Missed

Two weeks ago a school district conducted their own "in-house" TSCM sweep for spycams after an employee was charged with 30 child pornography and voyeurism charges. Big fail. Multiple reasons.

This week...

An Illinois dental practice has been sued by 11 employees after an hygienist allegedly hid two cameras in the work bathroom, new court papers show.

One camera was discovered Oct. 22 in a unisex employees’ bathroom of the national dental chain Aspen Dental in Crestwood, and it was turned over to the police department, according to the lawsuits filed in Cook County Circuit Court on Thursday.

That same day, dental hygienist Armani Alexander, 25, “admitted to placing the camera” in the bathroom and was arrested, the court papers say.

The office assured the workers that they swept the premises and didn’t find any more cameras.

Yet Oct. 26, a second camera was discovered in the same bathroom, court documents allege...

Aspen admitted that a background check for Alexander — who had only been with the company for two months — “was flagged for criminal activity,” the court papers say...

The workers — who are each suing for at least $50,000 — have brought claims of negligent hiring and supervision against the practice. more

No surprise there. This DIY amateur hour bug sweep was an exercise in negligence. 

Consider these points...

• The police were given the first camera and had a confession the same day. "Case closed."
• We don't know if the police conducted a follow-up inspection for additional cameras. If they didn't, they failed. If they did, they failed to find the second camera.
  
• The practice knowingly hired a hygienist with known criminal activity ...and didn't investigate further.
  
• No mention of an independent Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM) specialist being called in to investigate. Big fail.
  
• "The office assured the workers that they swept the premises and didn’t find any more cameras." (Visions of Steve Martin.) ..."Yet Oct. 26, a second camera was discovered in the same bathroom."

 Why is all this important?

Emotional pain and embarrassment aside... not conducting a professional emergency sweep will have expensive consequences, and may put this dentist out of business.

• 11 employees suing for $50,000.00 each = $550,000.00

Canada - The man who recorded people changing and using a staff bathroom at Summerhill Winery was a “raging alcoholic” at the time, according to his lawyer... Leighton's defence counsel Cory Armour said his client had been drinking a 26-ounce bottle of hard liquor and two bottles of wine every day in August 2019, when he hid cameras inside the staff washroom at Summerhill Winery. He was an employee of the winery at the time. more

 FL - A man is facing video voyeurism charges while claiming to be on a job interview. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrested Che Cunningham, 27, on the third floor of an unidentified office building... According to the arrest report, Cunningham said he came to the building for a job interview but didn't remember the employer's name or office number. He claimed he had to use the bathroom and accidentally walked into the women's restroom. more

FL - A Village of Chitty Chatty man has entered a plea in a criminal case in which he is accused of using his phone to shoot video of a man in an adjacent bathroom stall. Sumter County sheriff’s deputies had been searching for a man who had gone to Lowe’s Home Improvement ... and attempted to use his phone to video a man using an adjacent stall in a restroom. more

IN - A Jay County man has been charged with voyeurism after failing to convince authorities his actions had been part of an ill-conceived Halloween prank. Sheriff's deputies said Doublin was visiting the home of a female acquaintance when he tried to use his cellphone to record images of the woman's daughter as she entered and emerged from a shower. The young woman had suspected Doublin of such behavior earlier, and placed a camera in a hallway to record his actions on Oct. 31, according to an affidavit. more

Australia - A woman has shared the sneaky way a man was trying to record her getting undressed in a changing room in a bid to help others stay safe... (The) video shows, the man in the stall next to hers had used this gap to try to record her getting undressed, positioning his camera phone between his feet on the floor to point inside her cubicle and film her getting undressed. more

MS - A Mississippi man has been arrested after police reportedly found a camera he installed in his neighbors bedroom wall. On Friday, Oxford police arrested 44-year-old Gary Morris after officers responded to a residence on Christman Drive where a woman found a camera lens protruding through her bedroom wall. more

Canada - A 37-year-old man faces voyeurism-related charges for allegedly filming an Ottawa woman without her consent during consensual sexual encounters over a two-year period. The Almonte man met the victim on a dating app. more

SC - Agents with SLED have confirmed the arrest of a Laurens County Detention Center officer. Warrants say Tollison on multiple occasions invited a victim into his office to change her clothing in private... During these incidents, Tollison set up a web camera in his office and photographed the victim undressing without her knowledge or consent. more

Borneo - The Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed a four-month jail sentence to a 42-year-old cleaner for recording a video of a woman using the female restroom at a government primary school... The court was also informed that he had been employed for a year as a cleaner at the school. more

Singapore - Earlier this year, Lynn Neo started locking the door of her hostel room whenever she took a nap... She and other friends began taking precautions like these immediately after they heard about a 24-year-old male student at NUS who had mounted two spycams in women’s toilets in their college. more

Apple's iOS 14 Now Alerts You To Eavesdropping & Spycam'ing

Any time an app access your microphone, a little amber dot will appear in the status bar, over by where the Wi-Fi and cellular connection symbols are. 

When an app access the camera, a green dot will appear. 

These are fairly universally understood as “recording” lights and they will clearly point out when an app you’re using is accessing the camera or microphone at times it shouldn’t.

Just since the release of the iOS 14 beta, the lights have already revealed sketchy behavior in several apps that have gone on to promise updates to fix the “bugs.” (good word to use)

Thailand - A school director has been moved to an inactive post pending an investigation into a video showing him placing a camera in the toilet of a pub in this northeastern province. more

 ID - A federal grand jury has indicted a Rigby man on 17 charges after he was arrested last year for video voyeurism...Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies learned that a woman had discovered videos of a 14-year-old girl in the shower on Boam’s phone. Additionally, the woman stumbled upon a video of herself showering on the phone, according to an affidavit of probable cause. more

Singapore - NTU student caught trying to film hall mate showering. When confronted, suspect allegedly claimed it was his first time and he was just being 'playful and curious'. more

MI - Police were called to the Aqua-Tots after a woman complained she saw a recording device capturing her in a changing stall and reported it to staff. Sakamoto was arrested for allegedly using a hidden camera. They found the memory card to his phone in the toilet in which they suspect he put there. more

TX - A Sevier County man faces a felony charge of video voyeurism for an alleged incident involving a female relative, according to records....a Sevier County woman reported to the Sheriff's Office that her 13-year-old female relative had found nude photos and videos of herself on the suspect's iPad...The girl told police she often got dressed in her closet. She reported that she was bending over to pick up some clothes when she noticed the iPad on a shelf and that it was recording. The girl reported that she stopped the recording and went to the recently deleted videos, where she found a video of herself changing clothes. more

UK - A woman was undressing after finishing her shift when she noticed an LED light shining from a shoe which had been placed in the next cubicle in the mixed gender locker room. She then discovered a small black camera attached to a long cable and yanked it towards her, before it snagged. The horrified supermarket worker found the peeping Tom cowering in a nearby locker and demanded his phone. more

LA - A onetime Assumption Parish political candidate and local business leader has been arrested for a second time in three months on video voyeurism counts. more

AR - Dillon Dooms, 35, is accused of hiding cameras inside his studio and videotaping unsuspected models changing their clothes... While changing clothes, the woman noticed a USB charging port with a small, pin-point-style lens on it. She inspected the device and found that it was a video camera with a micro SD card inside. According to the report, she found three other hidden cameras in the studio. She was only able to retrieve one of the SD cards from the cameras. The woman took the SD card to Fayetteville Police. Dooms was interviewed by investigators a few days later. more

Spycam News: X-Youth Basketball Coach Sentenced to 20 Years

 PA - In June 2016, James Hardcastle, 42, transported three minor boys, ages 15, 16 and 16, as their coach to Wildwood, New Jersey to participate in a basketball tournament, and shared a motel room with them in which there was no shower curtain.  

The defendant installed a USB drive containing a hidden camera in a power outlet in the bathroom and surreptitiously filmed each of the minors taking showers.  

Previously, in June and July 2015, the defendant also attempted to videotape two minors in a bathroom using a hidden camera while the minors were visiting his home in Bensalem. more

Canada - A suspended Mountie charged with sex crimes by two different police services across the country is alleged to have secretly filmed women 34 times inside the bathroom of his south Ottawa apartment, during sex and in hotel rooms. more

FL - Robert Privette, 49, was staying at the DoubleTree resort in Key West when he is alleged to have heard two women in the room next door returning from the beach. Privette is then said to have managed to slide a tiny spy camera surreptitiously under the door of the room in order to film the pair, aged 24 and 27, as they undressed after a day on the sands. more

AR - A 41-year-old man accused of secretly videotaping a female teenager with a hidden camera in a Bluetooth speaker is facing video voyeurism and child pornography charges. more

India - A man arrested for voyeurism jumped into the sea while being taken to the beach by the police to collect evidence on Wednesday. His hands were cuffed. His body is yet to be found. more

UK - A former presenter of BBC News...who has shifted his career from being a British TV news personality to evangelical preaching, said most of these offences were committed with children during the past 30 years...He also admitted to two counts of making explicit videos of children... more

UK - A man has admitted using a hidden camera to film people using the toilet in Bristol...Prosecutor May Li said Andrews was discovered when one of the victims noticed a green light above a doorway and saw it was a hidden camera. The Little Bugger Spycam or Beetleloose

Scientists developed a teensy-tiny black-and-white camera that can comfortably be mounted on a live beetle—specifically a death-feigning beetle and a Pinacate beetle.

The device streamed photos and videos straight to an iPhone, depicting exactly what the beetle was staring at: from squirrels that look like hulking grizzly bears to a truck that looms like a mountain. They published their findings in Science Robotics last week.

The entire system weighs around a tenth of a playing card, uses minimal power, and keeps the frame pointed at where the bug looks by mimicking its steering mechanisms. more

S. Korea - KBS released an official statement on Wednesday saying it felt great responsibility for a spycam incident involving a comedian who appears on TV show “Gag Concert.” He is suspected of having installed hidden cameras (disguised as phone chargers) in the women’s restroom inside one of its buildings. more

FL - A man hired to install security systems inside a home along Florida’s Treasure Coast found himself behind bars after allegedly setting up a hidden camera inside a bathroom to spy on teenage girls. more

WY - One after the other on Tuesday, four women urged the District Court Judge Bill Simpson to impose the maximum sentence on the man who secretly videotaped them in a workplace bathroom last year...In a rare move, Simpson told the Park County prosecutor and Abraham’s defense attorney that he wanted to add four years of supervised probation onto the stipulated two to four years of prison time. more

KY - A lawsuit has been filed against an Elizabethtown-based tanning salon chain after police say a customer used a selfie stick to secretly shoot video of a nude woman tanning at a Louisville salon. more

WY - A suspect was arrested and is facing a felony charge of Voyeurism, after being accused of taking photos under the door of a Cheyenne store changing room. more

N. Ireland - A former contestant on TV talent show The Voice from Co Down has been revealed as a self-confessed sex offender who secretly recorded women for his own sexual gratification. more

LA - An Eros teen is facing multiple charges after he allegedly captured images of a juvenile nude by leaving his cell phone recording in a bathroom. more

VT - Eike Blohm, 38, (a UVM professor and doctor) was originally arrested on multiple counts of voyeurism April 17 for placing hidden cameras in staff bathrooms at UVMMC. He was charged with production and possession of child pornography May 22 and was subsequently fired from both the University and UVMMC. more

SC - A former Limestone College employee accused of recording women at a West Virginia university is now a person of interest in a voyeurism case on the Limestone campus. Gaffney Police Chief Chris Skinner said Collins Brandon Murphy, 32, has been named a person of interest in an incident which occurred at Limestone College. more

Canada - A judge has certified and approved a class action settlement against a late former Belleville orthodontist, who was alleged to have made video recordings of patients without their consent or knowledge. Dr. Anthony Garry Solomon had been charged with making and possessing child pornography, and voyeurism in 2017, but criminal charges were withdrawn following his death a short time later and a civil class action case has been underway for the past two and a half years. more

LA - More than 10 people who worked in the past for a Plaquemine snowball stand manager accused of videotaping people in the shop's bathroom have contacted the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office since the manager's arrest on May 2, making a current total of 24 employees who may have been affected, Sheriff Brett Stassi said Friday. more  more

Canada - Multiple charges relating to voyeurism and child pornography have been laid against a Clarington resident who police say formerly worked as a self-employed handyman. more

Namibia - Up to 34 children could be involved in a case in which a Windhoek resident yesterday appeared in cour..."The videos contain various children performing sexual acts in a bathroom where a covert camera was [suspected to have been] set up," Shikwambi said. "Videos were also obtained from a covert camera placed in a toilet at a sporting event inWindhoek recording minor boys visiting the toilet at a municipal swimming pool."

UK - A man has appeared in court accused of killing his wife in an arson attack after spying on her with secret cameras and posting sexually explicit images of her online. more

FL - A Pensacola man is accused of secretly filming women in a Lowe's bathroom, according to a sheriff's report. more

UK - Coronation Street (a TV show) fans were left frustrated last night after the police failed to find Geoff's hidden camera. During the months that Geoff has been abusing Yasmeen, he set up a secret camera to spy on his wife. more

When interviewed by police, the girl said she knew the camera was there because of a "dot" on the front of the clock and that camera's presence made her "uncomfortable" and "creeped out." On Valentine's Day, the girl placed a series of heart-shaped stickers on the clock to decorate it, while also blocking the camera's view. more

Spycam Story # 834 - Deputy Danner Investigates Rectangular Turd

FL - Citrus County Sheriff’s Office deputies following up on a tip ... led to an investigation and arrest of a Dunnellon man for video voyeurism, according to a Citrus County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit...

Upon observing the interior of the portable toilet, the deputies could observe a black box-type object floating in the water, the report stated. (a la Caddyshack pool scene)

Deputy Danner was able to safely retrieve the object from the toilet. Deputies noted the item was a portable Brickhouse security camera. They were able to remove the subscriber identity module (SIM) card (more accurately an SD card) located inside the camera.

Deputies observed multiple files on the SIM card and opened one. At the 16:39.48 timestamp mark deputies observed a white male subject wearing a collared white, red, blue and green striped shirt with white/khaki shorts affixing the camera to the inside of the toilet...

Deputies confirmed he was wearing the same clothing found on the file located on the SIM card where he placed the camera in the toilet. more  (You can't make this sh-t up. Perp gets the Darwin Award from us for filming himself.)

BBC Spycam Documentary

In a new BBC documentary Stacey Dooley Investigates: Spycam Sex Criminals.

The crime no doubt happens all over the world, but is actually one that has been sweeping South Korea lately, as many have been found guilty of planting recording equipment in public places and then charging people to view the footage online...

Bathroom Spycam'er Gives GoPro A Whole New Meaning

A New Jersey teen's recent routine visit to a bookstore turned into a horrible nightmare when someone filmed her while she was inside a bathroom stall, according to prosecutors. 

Juan Mejia, 44, of Paterson was arrested on Wednesday at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Clifton after he secretly videotaped two separate women who were using the bathroom stalls, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

The incident happened when her teen daughter said she had to use the bathroom. So, Delaney said, she went upstairs to help her own mother find a book.
Shortly after getting upstairs, Delaney said, her phone "started going off like crazy."

It was her daughter "texting me that someone in the stall next to her was filming her with a GoPro, that she was scared, and to please find someone and help her," Delaney wrote.
