Maybe Minority Report was a Documentary All Along?

Flock Safety’s CEO Garrett Langley told Forbes he believes his surveillance tech company could curb most US crime in the next decade,
which is… quite a statement.

His $7.5B business is actually off to a strong start, though: eight years in, Flock has 80k+ cameras keeping watch over roads and parking lots nationwide. And now they’re upping their dystopian pursuits, rolling out their own drones — with their cameras mounted on them, naturally.

For now, Flock is mostly reading license plates and detecting gunshots. For now. more

She fled the flat before watching back the footage and finding intimate clips of herself — plus an image of the creep changing the memory card.

“I always used to notice this little black dot in the washing basket across from the shower. I never in a million years thought he’d be spying on me. But given what had happened the night before, I went to have a closer look. My heart just stopped and I burst into tears. There was a green light flashing on the camera. I knew that it was on and I was being recorded.” Cops have launched a probe. more

Secret Recordings are on the Rise

Divorcees spying on exes, perverted landlords and staff wanting to know their next pay rise are among those making secret recordings using bugs hidden in everyday items, an expert has warned.

Spy cameras and listening devices obscured in phone chargers, photo frames, alarm clocks, mirrors, plug sockets, pens and smoke alarms are available in huge numbers on mainstream sites including Amazon and eBay.

One bug sweeping specialist told MailOnline that recording devices contained in plug sockets used for USB mobile phone chargers were particularly popular with snoopers because 'no one is going to suspect them'.  more

Any Wall Can be Turned Into a Camera...

...to see around corners!

An ordinary camera could soon take photos of things that are out of sight, thanks to algorithms that interpret how light bounces off a wall.

“Normally, when light bounces off rough surfaces, like walls, it scrambles the scene into a messy blur,” says Wenwen Li at the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei. “Our goal was to ‘unscramble’ that blur and recover the hidden scene. Think of it like turning a rough wall into a mirror.”

The method involves mapping the geometry and reflectance of the wall surface by taking many images under different lighting conditions, so the researchers could predict how each bump and groove would distort reflected light. Once they had created a digital model of the surface, the team devised equations to reconstruct a hidden image from the scrambled light pattern

Li and her colleagues have successfully demonstrated real-time imaging at 25 frames per second using an ordinary camera, like one found in a smartphone. more

Secret Cameras Found in Bathrooms

Police are searching for the person who hid multiple cameras in a Hermosa Beach dance studio bathroom used by children, parents and employees.

A parent made the disturbing discovery Saturday morning at the dance studio in the 1100 block of Aviation Boulevard, the Hermosa Beach Police Department announced in a news release.

Police officers arrived at the studio around 9:30 a.m. and found that multiple cameras were hidden in bathrooms at the studio. The parent who found the cameras turned them over to staff who then contacted police, according to authorities. more

"This is like a safe and sacred place for many children for the last over 25 years. So, I'm horrified," Liliana Somma, the owner of School of Dance and Music, said through tears.

Now, Somma is taking every precaution she can think of... "Also, we bought these regular sweeping devices that we're going to be doing throughout the day, which I think everyone should be doing," Somma said. "But that's what we're going to be doing. That's newly purchased. We also added cameras in the hallway so we can see who is coming in and out of the studio itself." more
"Sweeping devices" alone are not an effective remedy. You need to know what to look for, and where to look. You need THIS.

Cameras Are Popping Up in Eldercare Facilities

Roughly 20 states now have laws permitting families to place cameras in the rooms of loved ones. Facility operators are often opposed...

Though they remain a contentious subject, cameras in care facilities are gaining ground. By 2020, eight states had joined Minnesota in enacting laws allowing them, according to the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care: Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington.

The legislative pace has picked up since, with nine more states enacting laws: Connecticut, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming. Legislation is pending in several others. California and Maryland have adopted guidelines, not laws. The state governments in New Jersey and Wisconsin will lend cameras to families concerned about loved ones’ safety. more

Spy Cam News: 2024 Singapore Slings

• 519 voyeurism cases were reported last year — a 9% rise.

• Over 30% of the incidents occurred in victims' own homes.

• Physical crime cases in Singapore remained stable in 2024.

Most cases at residential premises (124 cases or 76.5%) were committed by perpetrators known to the victims (such as boyfriends/ex-boyfriends, household members or fellow tenants). Cases at shopping complexes and on the public transport network typically involved perpetrators not known to the victims.

At public transport nodes, the SPF has started initiatives to display advisory messages on voyeurism prominently on floor decals at selected MRT stations. Anti-voyeurism messages are also broadcast at all MRT stations during peak hours. The SPF has also collaborated with the Restroom Association (Singapore) to introduce security design guidelines, enhancing safety in public toilets. more

New Hidden Camera Lawsuit Filed Against Royal Caribbean

A group of 12 cruise ship guests, all US citizens, have filed a new lawsuit against Royal Caribbean over a hidden camera case
that saw a crew member jailed for 30 years. Aronfeld Trial Lawyers filed the suit in Miami on behalf of the 12 plaintiffs.

Filipino Arvin Joseph Mirasol, a former stateroom attendant on Symphony of the Seas, was convicted of placing hidden cameras in bathrooms and recording footage earlier this year. He pled guilty to video voyeurism and child abuse material charges.

“The fact that many victims we represent still do not know if and how their images have been used or circulated is incredibly disturbing. Some of the plaintiffs are children – and once an image is on the internet it is there forever,” said attorney Spencer Aronfeld who is handling the new complaint. more
